The cost to start a jewelry brand with lab-grown diamonds in 2026 depends on one choice: made to order or stock. Made to order, you pay for a business, a store, samples and photos, not inventory. As of October 2026, a Wyoming LLC filing is $100 and Shopify Basic is $29 to $39 a month. Grandior samples start at $259.
I run my own fine jewelry brands, and the founders who contact Grandior ask the same money questions I once asked. Is there a minimum order? (There isn't.) Who owns the CAD? (The brand, once it is paid for.) What about duties for US buyers, and can the box carry my brand? This guide puts real numbers on each line, so you can build your own budget.
How much does it cost to start a jewelry brand with lab-grown diamonds?
The cost to start a jewelry brand made to order is mostly fixed setup costs, plus a small cost on every sale. You pay once for a business, a domain, samples, photos and brand work. Then you pay a monthly store plan, card fees on each sale, and production for each order after your customer has paid.
That last point is the big one. With a made-to-order partner, you never pay for a piece nobody has bought. Lab-grown diamonds help too: they are real diamonds, and their lower cost keeps your sample and production prices within reach for a new brand.
What does each launch tier cost?
There are three common ways to launch, and they differ mainly in design work and how much you hand off. The table lists Grandior's prices for what we sell and checked outside costs as of October 2026. Totals depend on your choices, so add up the lines you need.
| Cost line | Lean made-to-order launch | Mid launch | Custom-design-led launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| US business (Wyoming LLC example) | $100 state filing fee | $100 state filing fee | $100 state filing fee |
| Domain | From about $9 a year | From about $9 a year | From about $9 a year |
| Shopify plan | Basic, $29 to $39 a month | Basic, $29 to $39 a month | Grow, $79 to $105 a month |
| Designs | Ready designs from our lookbook, no CAD | A few custom designs, CAD from $55 each | A custom range; complex designs from $250 each |
| Samples | 2 or 3 pieces, from $259 each in silver | Silver and gold, gold from $319 each | One sample per hero design |
| Packaging and order workflow | Onboarding, $1,000 | Onboarding, $1,000 | Included with the brand bundle |
| Brand identity | Your own | Your own | Brand bundle, $3,000 |
| Store build | You build it | Store setup, $1,500 | Store setup, $1,500 |
| Product photos | AI trial, $75 | AI starter, $400 for 10 products | AI starter, $400, or more |
| Stock | None | None | None |
Shopify's monthly price is lower when billed yearly. The LLC row is one example; other states charge different fees, and you may also pay for a registered agent. Marketing is not in the table because it is the line that varies most, and it is your call.
Lean made-to-order launch
This is the cheapest way to test a market. You pick ready designs from our lookbook, check them with a few samples, set up packaging and the order workflow, and build a simple store yourself. Most of your money goes on samples and photos.
Mid launch
You add a few designs of your own and hand off the store build. A store setup gives you a Shopify store ready to sell, and the AI starter pack gives you on-hand and lifestyle photos for 10 products. This suits founders who have tested demand and want a stronger first collection.
Custom-design-led launch
Every hero piece is yours. You pay for custom CAD and a sample of each design. The brand bundle covers logo, packaging artwork, website copy and product naming, and waives the onboarding fee. It costs the most up front, but nobody else can sell your range.
What costs come after launch?
After launch, your costs follow your sales. These are the lines to keep in your budget each month:
- Production per order. Each piece is priced per design, line by line, and paid per order. You agree it in writing before you list, so you can price with confidence.
- Card processing. As of October 2026, Shopify Payments charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per online card sale on Basic, and 2.7% plus 30 cents on Grow. Other payment providers add a Shopify fee of 2% on Basic.
- Your store plan, apps and domain renewal. Shopify notes renewal prices for domains can change.
- Annual state fees. Wyoming's LLC annual report fee is at least $60.
- Import duties and taxes. Pieces made in India and shipped to US customers can attract duties. Read our guide to jewelry import duty from India to the US before you set prices.
- Returns, resizing and remakes. Decide your policy early and budget for it.
All outside figures above come from Shopify's pricing page, Shopify domains and the Wyoming Secretary of State fee schedule, effective July 1, 2026, checked on October 21, 2026.
Why is made to order cheaper than holding inventory?
Because you pay for every stocked piece before anyone buys it. Take a modest range of 15 designs, each in 3 sizes and 2 metals. That is 90 pieces to buy before your first sale, and many will sit in a drawer while gold prices move.
Made to order, you buy a few samples instead. Each piece is made after your customer pays, packed in your branding and dispatched within 7 days of confirmation. There is no minimum order, so you can test one design at a time.
How should you price lab-grown diamond jewelry?
Price from your full landed cost, not from what competitors charge. Landed cost is production, packaging, shipping, duties and card fees for one piece. Then set a price that still pays for the marketing that brings each customer in, plus returns and remakes.
Check that price against what shoppers already pay for similar pieces. Our guide to lab-grown diamond jewelry retail prices shows how to benchmark. If your price only works with no ad spend, the design or the metal needs to change, not your margin.

What labelling rules apply to lab-grown diamonds in the US?
You must say clearly that a lab-grown diamond was made in a laboratory. The FTC Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) give qualifiers such as "laboratory-grown" or "laboratory-created", and the disclosure must make clear the stone is not mined. For laboratory-made stones, the Guides ask for the qualifier immediately before the stone's name and just as prominent.
The Guides also limit the unqualified word "diamond" to stones that meet the definition of a diamond. A simulant such as moissanite is never a diamond. Build these rules into your product titles, descriptions and certificates from day one; fixing them across a live catalog costs time.

Questions founders ask
How much does it cost to start a jewelry brand?
It depends on your model. A made-to-order brand mainly pays for a business, a store, samples, photos and marketing. A brand that holds stock also pays for every piece in its range before it sells any of them, which is where most of the money goes.
Can I start a lab-grown diamond jewelry brand without inventory?
Yes. With a made-to-order partner, each piece is made after your customer pays, packed in your branding and shipped to them. You buy samples to check quality and shoot photos, but you never buy stock.
How much does it cost to design a custom jewelry piece?
At Grandior, custom CAD starts from $55 per design, and complex designs such as halos, pave or multi-stone pieces start from $250. The exact price depends on the design and is confirmed once we see your brief. The design belongs to you once it is paid for.
How much does a Shopify store cost per month?
As of October 2026, Shopify's Basic plan is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly. Online card payments through Shopify Payments on Basic cost 2.9% plus 30 cents per sale. Apps and a paid theme cost extra.
Do I need an LLC to start a jewelry brand?
Not always, but many founders form one to separate business and personal liability. State fees differ. In Wyoming the filing fee was $100 as of October 2026, with an annual report fee of at least $60. Check your situation with an accountant.
How do I have to describe lab-grown diamonds in the US?
The FTC Jewelry Guides say a diamond made in a laboratory must carry a clear qualifier such as laboratory-grown or laboratory-created, so buyers know it is not mined. Never call a simulant such as moissanite a diamond.
