Short answer
An engagement ring on hand photo shows buyers the ring's real size on a finger. A brand can make one for every design, metal and skin tone from 1 sharp packshot with AI, as long as the ring itself is never changed. Grandior's AI Studio starts with a $75 trial, and 10 products cost $400.
- Trial
- $75 for 1 product: 4 images and 1 model video
- Starter 10
- $400, or $40 per product
- Studio 50
- $1,500, or $30 per product
- Product video
- $20 per video

On a white background, a 1 ct oval could be any size. On a hand, a buyer gets it in a second. That's the job of an engagement ring on hand photo. The catch is volume: one ring in 3 gold colors needs 3 sets of on-hand shots. AI can now make them from 1 sharp packshot, with no hand model, as long as the ring itself never changes.
I run my own fine-jewelry brands as well as Grandior, and the photo list is what sneaks up on you. Every new design, metal and stone size needs its own shots. Booking a hand model, a nail tech and a studio day for each one stops making sense long before the catalog is done.
Why does an engagement ring on hand photo matter on a product page?
It answers the buyer's first question: how big is it, really? A packshot on white shows the design but not the scale. Crop tight and a 1 ct stone looks enormous; pull back and it looks like a speck.
Baymard Institute's product page research found that 42% of users try to judge a product's size from its images, and that 28% of the 60 large sites it benchmarked had no "in scale" image at all (Baymard Institute, checked October 2026). Baymard recommends showing products on a person or next to familiar objects.
Shopify's own photography guide says the same. In-context shots let shoppers "gauge size as well as imagining it in their own lives" (Shopify). For an engagement ring, the context is a hand.
What makes a good on-hand ring photo?
Accurate first, pretty second. Run these five checks on every frame.
- Scale. Stone, band and finger in true proportion. A small hand makes a stone look bigger than it is, and buyers notice the day the ring arrives.
- Finger size. Pick a hand close to your typical buyer. If you show only one hand, note the ring size it's wearing.
- Lighting. Soft, even light that shows sparkle without blowing out the stone. Hard glare hides the cut.
- True metal color. White, yellow and rose gold must look like the alloy you ship. 14K and 18K yellow gold are different shades, so match the karat.
- The stone, untouched. No added sparkle, no whiter color, no bigger table, no extra side stones. The stone in the photo is the stone in the box.
Nails matter more than most brands expect. Long, bright nails pull the eye off the ring. Short, neutral nails suit a classic solitaire. A bold manicure can work for a fashion-led brand, but keep it consistent across the catalog or the grid looks like five different stores.
Which shots does a ring listing need?
A packshot, two on-hand angles, a lifestyle image and a short video. Then the same ring in each metal you sell, and on a range of hands.
| Shot type | What it shows the buyer | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Packshot on white | The exact design, stone shape and prongs | First image on the product page and marketplaces |
| Top-down on hand | How big the center stone looks on a finger | Second image on the product page |
| Angled on hand | Setting height, profile and band width | Product page gallery, ads |
| Same ring in white, yellow and rose gold | Which metal they are choosing | Product page, one image per metal option |
| Range of hands (skin tones, hand sizes, nails) | The ring on a hand like their own | Product page gallery, ads for different audiences |
| Lifestyle scene | How it looks worn day to day | Instagram, Meta ads, email |
| Short product video | Sparkle and movement | Reels, TikTok, product page |
| Unedited real photo | Proof of the actual piece | Etsy's required photo, trust on any page |
The "range of hands" row is the one most brands skip, usually because it's the most expensive to shoot the old way. But a buyer decides whether yellow gold suits her by seeing it on a hand like hers. Show the same ring on several skin tones, hand sizes and nail styles, and more buyers can picture it as theirs.
How are AI on-hand photos made from one packshot?
You send clear photos of the ring; the hand, light and scene are generated around it. The ring is then retouched and checked against the real piece. In our AI Studio it runs like this:
- Send the ring. Two or three sharp photos of each piece on a plain background, or your existing product shots. After you order, we email an upload link within one business day.
- Choose the hands. Tell us the skin tones, hand sizes and nail styles you want, and which metals you sell.
- We create. Images are generated, retouched and checked so the stones, prongs and metal match your real piece.
- You approve. Anything that drifts from the real ring, such as a prong, a stone count or the shape, gets redone. Files come back sized for Shopify, Instagram, Meta ads and email.
White, yellow and rose gold versions all come from the same packshot. The metal color has to match the alloy you actually ship, so if you've never seen your design in rose gold, order a sample to check quality and color before you list it.
What are the honesty rules for AI ring photos?
The ring in the photo must be the ring the buyer gets. Change the hand, the light and the scene as much as you like. Leave the ring alone.
The FTC says "advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive", and it reads an ad in context, pictures included (FTC Advertising FAQ's, as of October 2026). An AI image that makes a stone look bigger, whiter or more brilliant than the real one is a misleading picture, whatever tool made it.
How should you use on-hand photos on Shopify, ads and Etsy?
Packshot first, on-hand next, and a crop for every channel.
Product pages. Packshot as the hero, top-down on-hand second. Attach one on-hand image to each metal variant, so the photo swaps when a buyer clicks rose gold. Put the range of hands further down the gallery.
Ads. On-hand and lifestyle shots give a thumb-scrolling buyer a sense of scale that a ring on white can't. Use vertical crops for Reels and Stories, square for the feed. A $20 product video adds movement for each ring.
Etsy. Etsy updated its rules on 22 October 2026. As of October 2026, most listings need at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, with no AI or editing on that photo. Other images may use AI tools if they accurately show the item's color, condition, scale and materials. Etsy also bans using AI to change an item's core design or features (Etsy Listing Image Requirements). It recommends noting in the description when images were edited (Etsy Seller Handbook).
So on Etsy, lead with one real, unedited photo of the ring and add AI on-hand shots after it. Sellers who have their own designs made by us can read how we work as an Etsy production partner.
What does an engagement ring on hand photo cost with AI?
At Grandior, AI photos start at $75 for one product and drop to $30 per product on the 50-product pack. Each product in a pack gets a white-background shot, an on-hand or on-model shot and lifestyle scenes.
| Pack | Products | Images | Price | Per product |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trial | 1 | 4 plus 1 model video | $75 | $75 |
| Starter 10 | 10 | 40 | $400 | $40 |
| Studio 50 | 50 | 200 | $1,500 | $30 |
| Product video | Per video | Video only | $20 | $20 |
The trial comes back in 3 business days, so you can judge the result on one ring before you commit a whole range. Studio 50 adds a kickoff call to set the scene and model style, which is the right moment to plan a set of hands across skin tones. Everything is yours to use on your store, social and ads. The full offer is on the AI Studio page.
Building a range with us? Pick designs from the lookbook and shoot each one the same way, so the whole catalog looks like one brand.

Questions founders ask
How do you photograph an engagement ring on a hand?
Use soft, even light, a relaxed hand and a finger size that matches your typical buyer. Shoot one top-down view and one angled view so buyers see both the stone and the setting height. Keep the metal color true and never retouch the stone.
Can AI put my ring on a hand?
Yes. You send two or three sharp photos of the ring on a plain background, and the hand, light and scene are generated around it. The ring must then be checked against the real piece so the stone, prongs and metal stay exactly as made.
Are AI jewelry photos allowed on Etsy?
Yes, with limits. As of October 2026, Etsy requires at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Other images may use AI if they accurately show the item's color, condition, scale and materials, and Etsy recommends saying in the description that images were edited.
Should I show rings on different skin tones?
Yes, if your buyers come from different backgrounds. A buyer judges how a metal suits them by seeing it on a hand like theirs. Yellow, white and rose gold each read differently against different skin tones.
Do AI ring photos change the diamond?
They should not, and a good studio checks for it. Anything that drifts from the real piece, such as a prong, a stone count, the stone's shape or size, has to be redone. If the stone is lab-grown, say lab-grown in the caption.
How much does AI jewelry photography cost?
At Grandior a one-product trial is $75. Packs are $400 for 10 products and $1,500 for 50 products, with product videos at $20 each.
