Gold Vermeil vs Gold Filled vs Gold Plated vs Solid Gold: Which Should Your Brand Sell?

Gold vermeil vs gold filled vs plated vs solid gold: FTC rules (2.5 microns, 1/20 by weight), durability, cost and which suits your jewelry brand.

Short answer

Solid gold is gold alloy all the way through. Vermeil is sterling silver with at least 2.5 microns of gold. Gold filled is a mechanically bonded gold layer of at least 1/20 of the metal weight. Gold plated needs only 0.175 microns, on any base metal. Thicker gold costs more and wears longer.

Vermeil
Sterling silver base, gold of 10K or more, at least 2.5 microns
Gold filled
Gold layer of 10K or more, at least 1/20 of metal weight
Gold plated
Gold of 10K or more, at least 0.175 microns, any base
Solid gold
10K, 14K or 18K alloy throughout, karat always stated

Gold vermeil vs gold filled comes down to the base metal and how much gold sits on top. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, vermeil is sterling silver with at least 2.5 microns of gold. Gold filled is a bonded layer of at least 1/20 of the metal weight. Gold plated needs only 0.175 microns. Solid gold is gold alloy all the way through.

I run my own fine-jewelry brands. The material you choose sets your price band, your return rate and what you can honestly say on the product page.

What does the FTC say about each type of gold?

The FTC Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) set how US sellers can describe gold. I checked the current text on eCFR in October 2026. The thresholds below are as of October 2026.

  • Solid gold. An alloy of gold throughout. The word "gold" must be immediately preceded by the karat, such as 14K Gold. Unqualified "gold" means 24K. A hollow piece should not be called "solid" (16 CFR 23.3).
  • Gold vermeil. A base of sterling silver, coated on all significant surfaces with gold or gold alloy of at least 10K. The layer must be of reasonable durability and at least equal to 2.5 microns of fine gold (16 CFR 23.4).
  • Gold filled. A layer of gold alloy of at least 10K, bonded by a mechanical process such as soldering or welding, that makes up at least 1/20 of the weight of all the metal in the piece.
  • Rolled gold plate and gold overlay. The same mechanical process with at least 1/40 by weight. The fraction must be shown, as in 1/40 12 Kt. R.G.P.
  • Gold plated or gold electroplate. Gold or gold alloy of at least 10K, applied by electroplating, at least equal to 0.175 microns of fine gold. From 2.5 microns it can be called heavy gold electroplate.

The Guides do not define "gold flashed" or "gold washed". Sellers use those words for coatings thinner than the plated minimum. If you sell them, describe them plainly and do not suggest they will last.

How do gold vermeil vs gold filled vs plated compare?

They differ most in the base metal, the amount of gold and how long the color lasts in daily wear. The table compares them on the points that matter to a brand.

Which gold should your brand sell?

Sell the material your customer expects at your price, and describe it exactly. A gifting brand at an entry price can do well with vermeil. A bridal or heirloom brand usually needs solid gold. Problems start when the material and the promise do not match.

Think about three things:

  • Returns. A thin layer that wears through within months turns into returns and bad reviews. Thicker gold costs more up front and less later.
  • Margins. Plated and gold-filled pieces cost less to make, but customers know that and pay less. Solid gold costs more, but holds a higher price and resale value.
  • Positioning. "Fine jewelry" buyers expect precious metal. Vermeil has a precious silver base. Plated base metal fits fashion jewelry, not a fine-jewelry promise.

What about tarnish and sensitive skin?

Gold itself does not tarnish. Sterling silver does: it darkens with air and moisture over time. On vermeil this shows only where the gold layer wears through or at edges. Simple care cards, a pouch and a polishing cloth help.

Skin claims need care. The American Academy of Dermatology says nickel allergy commonly develops from wearing jewelry containing nickel. It lists 18K and higher yellow gold, sterling silver and platinum among options for people with a nickel allergy. Lower karat alloys and base metals vary in what they contain.

How should you describe each metal in listings?

Describe the base metal, the gold layer and the karat in every title and spec table. Under the FTC Guides, the karat must come with the word "gold" and be just as visible.

Listing wording that follows the FTC Guides
MaterialClear wordingAvoid
Solid gold14K gold, 14K yellow gold"Gold", "solid 14K gold" for hollow pieces
Vermeil14K gold vermeil over 925 sterling silver"Gold" alone, "vermeil" on a brass base
Gold filled14K gold filled, 1/20 14K GF"14K" stamped alone
Gold plated14K gold plated over brass"Gold", "14K" alone, "sterling" on plated pieces

Three more rules from the Guides:

  • Sterling means at least 925 parts per 1,000 silver (16 CFR 23.5). Silver-plated pieces must not be stamped "sterling".
  • Rhodium. If a gold or silver piece has a rhodium surface layer, disclose it. This is common on white gold.
  • Tolerance. Under the National Stamping Act, as cited in the Guides, gold parts without solder may fall short of the marked fineness by no more than 3 parts per 1,000, and 7 with solder.

Which metals does Grandior make?

Grandior makes in 925 sterling silver, gold vermeil and solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold, set with certified lab-grown diamonds. We do not make gold-filled or gold-plated base-metal pieces. If those fit your range, you will find them with other makers; use the questions above to vet them.

Questions founders ask

Is gold vermeil better than gold filled?

Neither is better in every case. Vermeil has a precious sterling silver base and a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns. Gold filled usually has a thicker gold layer, bonded to a base metal such as brass. Choose vermeil if a precious-metal base matters to your customers, gold filled if the thickest affordable gold layer matters more.

How thick is the gold on gold vermeil?

Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, the gold on vermeil must be at least 10K and equal to at least 2.5 microns of fine gold. A lower karat layer has to be physically thicker to meet that, because the measure is in pure gold.

Does gold vermeil tarnish?

The gold surface itself does not tarnish, but the sterling silver underneath can darken where the gold wears through or at exposed edges. Storing pieces dry and away from air slows this.

Can gold filled jewelry be stamped 14K?

Not as plain 14K. The FTC Guides say the karat must come with the term, such as 14K Gold Filled, often with the weight fraction, as in 1/20 14K GF. A plain 14K mark tells buyers the piece is solid 14K gold.

Is gold plated jewelry real gold?

The surface is real gold or gold alloy, but only a thin layer. The FTC example for gold plated sets a minimum of 0.175 microns of fine gold, and the karat must appear with the term, such as 14K Gold Plated.

Which gold jewelry is best for sensitive skin?

The American Academy of Dermatology lists 18K and higher yellow gold, sterling silver and platinum among options for people with nickel allergy. Ask your maker what each alloy and base metal contains before you make any skin claim.
