How to Make Merch Your Audience Keeps: Fine Jewelry Merch in 12 Steps (2026)

How to make merch your audience keeps: 12 steps to fine jewelry merch, from story and CAD to samples, pricing, launch, made-to-order shipping and support.

A gold bracelet, rings, stud earrings and a pendant, the kind of piece to plan when you learn how to make merch

Short answer

To make jewelry merch, pick one piece that carries your story, turn a sketch into CAD from $55, check a physical sample, then sell it made to order under your name. There is no minimum order, and each piece is packed in your branding and dispatched within 7 days of confirmation.

A merch tee gets worn until the print cracks. A gold pendant gets kept. If you want to know how to make merch in the second camp, it comes down to 12 steps: pick one piece and its story, design it, choose metal and stones, check a sample, then package, photograph, price, launch, sell, ship and support it. Made to order, you can start at 1 piece.

I run my own fine-jewelry brands as well as Grandior. Creators and small brands who reach out ask the same three things before anything else: is there a minimum (no), who owns the design (you, once it's paid for) and can the box carry their name (yes).

Why make jewelry merch instead of apparel?

Because it stays on the fan for years, with your name attached. A solid gold or sterling silver pendant gets worn, cleaned, worn again, and sometimes handed down.

Jewelry also works for audiences who don't want a logo across their chest. A symbol, a date, an inside joke or a set of coordinates means everything to your community and nothing to a stranger on the train. That's the point.

Apparel still earns its place: it's cheap to test. Jewelry is for the fans who want something that lasts.

How to make merch: what are the 12 steps?

Steps 1 and 2: what piece should you make, and what do you send?

Make the piece your audience would wear on an ordinary Tuesday, tied to one story they already know. A podcast catchphrase engraved on a bar necklace. An author's book symbol as a pendant. A community's founding date inside a signet ring. A club crest as a charm.

Then send what you have: a napkin sketch, a phone photo, your logo or a moodboard. Add the size you picture and who'll wear it, and use the brief form.

Steps 3 and 4: how does CAD work, and which metal should you choose?

CAD turns your sketch into a 3D model you sign off before any metal is cast. It starts from $55 per design, and $250 for detailed designs. The file is yours once it's paid for. Or start from one of the 500+ designs in the lookbook and personalize it.

Choose metal by what your fans will pay and how long it needs to last. 925 sterling silver is the usual entry point. Gold vermeil is sterling silver with gold of at least 10K and at least 2.5 microns thick under the FTC Jewelry Guides, as of October 2026. Solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold is the top tier. Read gold vermeil vs gold filled vs plated before you decide.

Stones are optional. Lab-grown diamonds are always labeled lab-grown. Moissanite is sold only as moissanite.

Step 5: why should you check a sample before you sell?

Because a render can't tell you how heavy a piece feels, how the polish catches light or whether the bail sits right on a chain. Every custom design gets a physical sample for your approval, and production pieces are checked against that approved sample before they ship.

For ready designs, order a sample to check quality in the metal you plan to sell. Look at the polish, the stone setting, the engraving and the clasp. Our guide to jewelry finishing has a checklist you can run at your desk.

Steps 6 and 7: what packaging and photos does jewelry merch need?

Packaging is part of the product, and it's half the unboxing video. Your box, pouch, card and inserts should carry your name, the story of the piece and a care note. It's all made to your branding, so the fan never sees ours.

Photos sell the piece before anyone holds it. You need a clean product shot, an on-hand or on-model shot and a short video. Our AI Studio makes them from photos of the real piece, from a $75 trial, with videos at $20 each.

Step 8: how should you price merch?

Price from your landed cost per piece, not from what other creators charge. Landed cost is everything it takes to get one piece into a fan's hands.

  1. Add up landed cost. The piece, packaging, shipping, any import duties and taxes, payment and platform fees, and an allowance for returns and resizes.
  2. Apply your markup. Use one method and keep it the same across metals.
  3. Check the market. Compare with fine pieces in the same metal that your fans could buy elsewhere.
  4. Set metal steps. Silver, vermeil and gold versions should step up clearly.
  5. Review after the first orders. Adjust once you see what sells.

US sellers should read our guide to jewelry import duty from India to the US.

Step 9: pre-order drop or always on sale?

Run a drop for urgency and always-on made to order for steady sales. Both work for the same reason: nothing is made until a fan pays.

  • Pre-order drop. Orders open for a set window, then close and the batch is made. Good for a book launch, a tour or an anniversary. Tell fans plainly when pieces will ship.
  • Always on. The piece stays live. Each order is made and dispatched within 7 days of confirmation. Personalized pieces can take longer, and timelines are confirmed per order.

Step 10: where should you sell jewelry merch?

Sell where your audience already buys, and keep one home base you own.

  • Your own store. A Shopify or WooCommerce store keeps the customer list yours, which matters the day an algorithm changes. We can build it for you.
  • Instagram and TikTok Shop. Great for launch-day traffic. Check the platform's handling-time rules for made-to-order items before you list.
  • Etsy. Only for your own designs. Etsy allows a production partner for a seller's original designs, disclosed on the listing. Don't list lookbook designs there as they are. See Etsy production partner.

Steps 11 and 12: who ships each order and handles after-sale?

We can do both. When a fan orders, the piece is made, checked against your approved sample, packed in your branding and shipped to them, tracked and insured, to 20+ countries. See jewelry dropshipping.

After-sale is where merch earns its reputation. A ring a half size too small, a return, a "where is my order" DM on a Sunday: each one needs a reply. Our store operations team answers customers under your brand in US business hours and handles returns and resizes to your policy.

Do you need the rights to your logo or artwork?

Yes. You must own or license every logo, drawing, character, cover and symbol on the piece. School, college and team logos are usually registered trademarks, so you need a license from the owner. Check marks in the USPTO trademark database.

If an illustrator drew your art, don't assume you own it. Under US law, a commissioned work is a "work made for hire" only in set categories and with a signed written agreement, per US Copyright Office Circular 30. Get a signed assignment or license that covers jewelry.

Questions founders ask

How do I make my own merch as a creator?

Start with one product that carries your story, not a full range. Get the design drawn or turned into CAD, check a physical sample, then sell it made to order so you hold no stock. A production partner can make, pack and ship each order under your name.

How much does it cost to make jewelry merch?

The design is the first cost. At Grandior, CAD starts from $55 per design and $250 for detailed designs, and the design is yours once paid. Production is quoted per design, line by line, because metal, stones and finish change the price.

Can I make merch with no minimum order?

Yes, if you sell it made to order. Each piece is made after a fan pays, so you never buy a run of stock up front. Grandior has no minimum order, and every order is dispatched within 7 days of confirmation.

Should I launch merch as a pre-order drop or keep it on sale all the time?

A pre-order drop builds urgency and gives you one batch to manage. Always-on made to order earns steadily and suits evergreen pieces. Many creators open with a drop, then keep the best seller on sale. Either way, state your shipping time honestly.

Can I sell jewelry merch on Etsy?

Only if the design is yours. Etsy lets sellers use a production partner for their own original designs, disclosed on the listing. You cannot list a supplier's ready designs as your own work there.

Do I need permission to put a logo or artwork on merch?

Yes, unless you own it. Team, school and brand logos, book covers and characters belong to someone. If an illustrator drew your art, get a signed agreement that gives you the rights you need for jewelry.
